The Harz has a way of bringing real landscapes and old stories together. The River Ilse, which rises in the Brocken area, runs between boulders and waterfalls through a picturesque valley. It is associated with the legend of Princess Ilse, whose name lives on in local folklore. In his “The Harz Journey”, the poet Heinrich Heine turned this figure into one of the gentlest and most fairy-tale-like stories connected with the local landscape. And on the Ilsenstein rock, a fortification existed as early as the 10th century — a reminder of the region's centuries-old history.

There is another famous mystery here too: the “Brocken spectre”. When a person's shadow is cast onto mist, it can appear enormous and almost alive; in the past, such sightings inspired stories of mysterious beings. Today the phenomenon is explained by optics, but that does not take away its sense of strangeness. We are not suggesting a ghost hunt, nor do we turn the date into a mystical performance. We simply like the light touch of mystery that gives these forests their particular charm.

Many scenic locations are within the national park, where visitors must stay on marked routes and open fires are prohibited. For that reason, we do not assume that tables, candles or equipment can be placed among protected rocks without prior checks and any required approvals. For decorative lighting, safe self-contained solutions are preferable in locations where their use is permitted.

The photographs look especially atmospheric in the early twilight, when the trees and rocks are still visible and soft lighting creates an intimate mood. In practice, however, the timing of the event depends on access to the location, route safety and local rules. If necessary, the styled part of the date can be moved to an approved space nearby while preserving the atmosphere of a woodland fairytale.
